Instragram effects on body image

An exploration of the effects of time spent on Instagram on anxiety, body image, self-esteem, and self-compassion in adults.

You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please ask me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to gain further understanding into the effects that social media, particularly Instagram may have on individuals and their perspectives on body image, anxiety, self-compassion, and self-esteem.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been chosen to take part in this study because you are over the age of 18, you are willing to participate, and you have no relevant diagnosed mental health disorders (including anxiety disorders or body image/eating disorders).

Do I have to take part?
No. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part, you can download a copy of this information sheet to keep and will be asked to sign an electronic consent form on the next page. If you decide to take part, you are still free to withdraw at any time without giving a reason by exiting the survey and providing the researcher with the unique code you will provide at the start of the study.

What will happen to me if I take part?
This study will entail answering a short online questionnaire, this will comprise a series of tick-box questions on the topics of body image, anxiety, self-compassion, and self-esteem, and should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There are no known disadvantages of taking part.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no known benefits to taking part, but you will be helping researchers understand the potential impact of Instagram use on psychological factors.

Your personal data will be processed for the purposes outlined in this notice. The legal basis that would be used to process your personal data will be the provision of your consent.
Your personal data will be processed so long as it is required for the research project. If we are able to anonymise or pseudonymise the personal data you provide we will undertake this and will endeavour to minimise the processing of personal data wherever possible. Or we will anonymise or pseudonymise the personal data you provide.

What will happen to the results of the research study?
The results will be finalised into a research project for a final year dissertation. Participants will have 2 weeks from completing the survey to withdraw their data providing the code word they provided at the start of the survey.
